2012 Preakness Stakes Predictions
An 11-horse field will be trying to spoil the party for projected first and second place frontrunners, Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another this weekend at Pimlico. One thing that people seem to forget is that, while Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another will be getting all the attention, there will be a few 2012 Preakness Stakes predictions contenders more than capable of pulling off an upset.
One of those horses with the potential to steal the spotlight is none other than Graham Motion’s Went The Day Well. The son of Proud Citizen finished fourth at the Kentucky Derby just behind Dullahan, who will not be competing this weekend in “The Second Jewel of the Triple Crown.”
At the present time, Went The Day Well is listed with the third best odds to win the 2012 Preakness Stakes at 6/1. Before his fourth place finish at the Derby, Went The Day Well was riding a two-race win streak (MSW & Spiral -G3). Adding to his legitimacy as a prime upset candidate is the fact that his trainer, knows exactly what I’ll Have Another and his camp are going through right now.
Motion who also trained 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, is being overlooked and even dismissed this year, despite Went The Day Well put on a heck of an effort at the Derby. After getting a taste for what it’s like to go into the Preakness as the derby winner, the Cambridge, England, native wouldn’t want it any other way.
“I’m more comfortable being under the radar. The biggest races I’ve won in my life I’ve been 28-1, and 40-1 and 25-1,” Motion told reporters this week. “I’m more relaxed about it (this year) because the Triple Crown is over for us in a manner of speaking.”
But Went The Day Well isn’t the only horse that can shock the world on Saturday night. One of my favorite picks in this year’s Derby was Mike Harrington’s Creative Cause. One of the most experienced three-year-olds in the 2012 Preakness Stakes, the son of Giant’s Causeway finished third at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as well as the San Vicente back in February.
From there, Creative Cause took it to the next level, defeating current Preakness Stakes favored Bodemeister to win the San Felipe. Less than a month later, he almost did it again, at the Santa Anita Derby, only to finish in second place behind you guess it: I’ll Have Another.
So as you can see, while the rivalry between Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another is justified, there are other horses more than capable of stealing the spotlight. As you can see, in the case of Creative Cause, he’s the only 2012 Preakness Stakes predictions contenders that can claim victories over both Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another.
This is great news for those that love betting on underdogs, which in turn, allows you to maximize the return on your investment. Personally, if I had to choose any horse that’s not Bodemeister or I’ll Have Another to win “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” it would be my pick as Kentucky Derby dark house: Creative Cause!
