According to odds to win THE PLAYERS Championship 2012, Rory McIlroy leads the way as the frontrunner to win this prestigious event. Currently, McIlroy leads the field as a 10/1 favorite over the rest of the field including: Lee Westwood [12/1], Luke Donald [15/1], Tiger Woods [20/1], Phil Mickelson [20/1] and others.

Still looking for his second victory of the season, the 2012 Honda Classic champion is coming off a second-place tie at the Wells Fargo Championship last week in Quail Hollow. Despite losing to Rickie Fowler in a dramatic one-hole playoff, McIlroy regained his No.1 spot in the world ranking by finishing second.

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman comes into this week riveting with confidence and looking to hold on to the top spot. There’s no question that McIlroy will be the man to beat this week at the world famous TPC Course at Sawgrass, a place where K.J. Choi was the victor a year ago.

“That’s nice. It’s a little consolation,” McIlroy said of his ascend to No.1 in the world. “I would rather win the tournament, but yeah, it’s good. I want to try and play well for the next few weeks and try and solidify my spot there at number one and hopefully start by doing that next week and giving myself another chance to win.”

What about that fellow named Eldrick Tont, you ask?

Well, the man better known as Tiger is coming off the worst back-to-back performances of his golf life, as he missed the cut for the 8th time in his career last week. His effort at the Wells Fargo was also the first time ever that the former No.1 has missed the cut for the same tournament twice. According to Woods, there are many things to correct before he can regain the form that got him a win at Bay Hill in late March.

“It all has to do with my setup,” he claims. “When I get over the golf ball and feel uncomfortable, I hit it great. I want to get comfortable, and I follow my old stuff and hit it awful. I just tried to get uncomfortable and feel as bad as I could and then I striped it.

“I know what I need to do. I just need more reps doing it. We’ve changed a bunch of different things, and every now and then, I fall into the old stuff. And that doesn’t work, the combo platter of old and new.”

Tiger returns to THE PLAYERS Championship this week, an event he withdrew from twice the last couple of years.
