Alistair Overeem Fails Drug Test Before UFC 146, Dana White Furious!
It appears that former K-1, Dream, and Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem will not be adding a UFC belt to his collection anytime soon. According to the latest reports, The “Demolition Man” failed a surprise drug test last March when he attended a UFC 146 pre-fight press conference to promote his upcoming bout against reigning title-holder, Junior Dos Santos in May.
According to sources, The Reem tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, which is usually a telling sign of steroid-usage. It appears that six fighters slated for UFC 146 were testes that day, but only Overeem’s came back positive. Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission told us on Wednesday that the Dutch striker’s testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels were greater than 10-to-1.
Anything above 6-to-1 is considered a violation, according to NSAC guidelines. On an email to The Underground, Kizer breaks down what happened:
“The following athletes were tested on March 27: Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva. All test results were negative, except Mr. Overeem tested positive for an increased T/E ratio (> 10). Mr. Overeem will need to appear before the Commission if he seeks licensure.”
For those that follow the sport closely, this is hardly shocking news, as Overeem is no stranger to PED speculation. In fact, there was a lot of doubt and confusion going into his UFC debut fight against Brock Lesnar, as Overeem failed to submit a sample in a timely manner. Read more…
Shortly after hearing the news, UFC president Dana White sounded off, especially because Overeem assured him and the Fertittas that he was indeed clean:
“I am beyond pissed about this,” he said. “I’m so [expletive] mad right now I can’t even begin. The worst part is that he sat in front of us and lied to us. How [expletive] stupid do you have to be? Seriously dumb.
“Anybody who’s using [PEDs] right now is an absolute [expletive] moron. It’s beyond — what’s the word I’m looking for — it’s beyond belief. It’s beyond comprehension. You’re an absolute moron, a brain-dead absolute [expletive] dummy. It goes beyond a guy have any common sense whatsoever.”
When asked about what would happen to the UFC 146 fight card if Overeem didn’t get licensed to fight in the state of Nevada, White simply said: “I don’t have a plan-B.”
Check out the UFC 146 pre-fight press conference, which was the day The Reem and the rest of the fighters on the podium were tested. It is believed that the UFC might give Frank Mir a shot at the title should Overeem be denied.
